The City of Sebring services approximately 5,400 residential customers per month, and picks up approximately 390 tons of garbage per month. There are 2 garbage trucks, with 1 operator/driver each, servicing 2 daily routes. These routes are picked up every Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday, from 6:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. - The City of Sebring does not pick up residential garbage on Wednesday. Residential garbage disposed of by the City of Sebring is taken to the Highlands county Landfill on Arbuckle Creek road.
A message on recycling:
The City of Sebring supports recycling and has made extensive efforts to bring a sustainable recycling program to its residents. Through the City’s research and discussions with several waste removal providers, it has been determined that a recycling program is not achievable at this time. Currently, the recycling market is such that the materials have little to no value for those companies who profit from its removal. As a result, those providers are unable to offer the City a reasonably priced option. We are continually exploring possibilities in hopes of resolving this issue. Residents are encouraged to participate in the discussion and provide any thoughts or ideas to City staff.
Automated Can Collection
The City of Sebring has implemented an automated garbage can collection program. Automated collection is a system where garbage or recycling containers are emptied using a mechanical arm on the collection vehicle, instead of workers lifting and emptying cans by hand. The city’s automated collection service is made by 1 solid waste employee (driver) per truck; the manual system requires a 3-person crew (driver and 2 collectors). The city provides 1- 96 gallon can per residence. Smaller sized cans (48 and 64) are available by request.
In order for automated pick-up to work successfully, solid waste drivers must stay in their trucks as much as possible. Each time a driver exits a truck, it slows down the route and creates delays in pick-up schedules. The Solid Waste division asks that residents / customers follow all automated cart instructions.
Place all items inside the cart. The lid should be fully closed. If the can is overfilled and the lid is propped open, the driver will be unable to empty the cart.
Place cart curbside by no later than 6:30 a.m. on your collection day.
Place the cart within 3 feet of the street curb with the arrow on the lid pointing toward the curb/street.
Keep carts at least 4 feet away from other carts, mailboxes, fire hydrants, low hanging trees or shrubs, parked cars, and utility poles so trucks can easily access the cart.
The following cannot be placed into the city issued containers:
- Hazardous materials
- Lead-acid batteries
- Paints or solvents
- Propane cylinders
- Sharp items
- Used oil or oil filters
- Yard trash
Residential customers of the City of Sebring are charged $165.00 per unit per year, equating to $13.75 per month. This is collected as part of your property tax.
You pay for your sanitation services through a fee. The fee appears on your property tax bill as an ad valorem assessment for Sanitation services. For that fee, you receive the following:
- 2 garbage pickups per week
- 2 yard trash pickups per month of a reasonable amount of yard trash (i.e. up to 4 grapple bucket scoops)
- 2 cubic yards of extraordinary waste per month. This includes white goods and items requiring additional management due to its bulk
At present, there are 4 holidays on which the residential division will not be operating. These holidays are:
- New Year’s Day
- Independence Day
- Thanksgiving Day
- Christmas Day
